This new 18×24 original oil painting features the majestic Whooping Crane, one of North America’s most endangered birds. It is part of my series, The Water’s Edge, which highlights Threatened, Endangered, and protected birds that depend on coastal areas as well as other bodies of water for their survival. Painted on a deep cradled wood panel with finished edges, it is wired and ready to hang.
The Whooping Crane population dropped to a critical low of 15 birds in 1938 due to habitat destruction and hunting. Captive breeding programs and habitat conservation have been crucial to the species’ recovery. As of 2025, there are over 800 Whooping Cranes in three wild populations and a captive population. They are listed federally as Endangered.
